Newcastle to Marrakech — 5-Day Sun, Desert & Medina Escape (Return Flights from Newcastle Airport Included — From £490pp)

OVERVIEW

Swap the Grey Skies of the Tyne for the Golden Dunes of the Sahara

If you’re from the Northeast, you know the drill. November through March, the grey rolls in off the North Sea and it stays. The idea of landing somewhere warm, sunny, and genuinely different from anything you’ve experienced starts to feel less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

Morocco from Newcastle is that trip. Three and a half hours direct from Newcastle Airport and you’re stepping off into the warmth of Marrakech — a city of ancient souks, rooftop terraces, and mint tea that’ll undo a whole winter’s worth of grey in about twenty minutes.

But this package doesn’t stop at Marrakech. Over 5 days and 4 nights you’ll drive south through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains, visit a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah that’s starred in more blockbusters than most actors, trek into the Sahara on camelback, and sleep in a Berber desert camp beneath a sky so full of stars it barely seems real. All with return flights, transfers, accommodation, meals, and guided tours included.

No connections via London. No driving to another city. Just straight from Newcastle to one of the most extraordinary destinations on earth.

What you’ll experience:

  • Direct flight from Newcastle Airport — no connections, no fuss
  • Wander the ancient walled Medina and souks of Marrakech
  • Drive the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m)
  • Explore Aït Ben Haddou — UNESCO kasbah, filmed in Gladiator, Game of Thrones
  • Ride camels across the golden Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
  • Sleep in a traditional Berber camp under a Sahara sky packed with stars
  • Watch dawn break over the desert before heading home

Schedule Details

Day 1 — Newcastle → Marrakech: The North Sea to the Sahara Starts Here

Board your direct flight from Newcastle Airport. Around 3 hours 30 minutes later, the rooftops of Marrakech appear below you — terracotta, sun-baked, ancient. Step off the plane into warm, dry air that smells of cedar and cumin and feels like the start of something properly different.

Your private driver meets you at arrivals and transfers you to your riad in the heart of the Medina or your hotel in Gueliz. After check-in and time to breathe, your first Moroccan evening begins: welcome drinks in a candlelit courtyard, followed by a traditional dinner — slow-cooked lamb tagine, Moroccan salads, harira soup, warm msemen flatbread, mint tea poured high and ceremonially. Whatever the weather's like back in Newcastle, it already feels very far away.

Day 1 highlights:

  • Direct flight from Newcastle Airport (~3h 30m)
  • Private transfer to riad or hotel
  • Welcome drinks & traditional Moroccan dinner
Day 2 — Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Your guide picks you up at your chosen time (7am, 8am, 9am, or 10am) and heads south into the Atlas Mountains. The road climbs steadily through walnut groves and Berber villages until you crest the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres — Morocco's highest road, with panoramic views in every direction that make you want to stop the car and just stand there.

On the southern descent, the landscape shifts from alpine to desert — drier, redder, older-feeling. First stop: the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of interlocking mud-brick towers you'll almost certainly recognise. Gladiator filmed here. Game of Thrones filmed here. Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven. It's not hard to see why — the place looks like it was built for cinema, because it kind of was, for 1,000 years before cinema existed.

Explore the ksar, have lunch nearby, then continue through Ouarzazate — the Hollywood of Africa — past the Atlas Film Studios and the Kasbah Taourirt before heading east through the Valley of Roses and the dramatic Dades Gorges. Arrive in Dades Valley by evening for a warm Moroccan dinner and a good night's rest.

Day 2 highlights:

  • High Atlas Mountains drive via Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m)
  • UNESCO Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou — Gladiator, Game of Thrones location
  • Ouarzazate — Hollywood of Africa & Atlas Film Studios
  • Valley of Roses & Dades Gorges
  • Traditional Moroccan dinner, overnight in Dades Valley
Day 3 — Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Sahara Desert (Merzouga)

After breakfast, the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs heads east through a landscape that changes constantly and never disappoints — ancient mud-brick fortresses, lush palm oases, Berber villages that look carved from the rock they sit on.

First stop: Tinghir, a market town set against one of Morocco's largest palm oases, fed by Atlas meltwater. Then the Todra Gorge — where limestone walls 300 metres high close in on either side of a narrow river path. Walk the gorge floor. Feel genuinely small. Lunch at a café wedged between the cliffs.

Then the landscape opens wide and flat and red. You're approaching the Sahara now. When the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon — vast, perfectly shaped, glowing — it's genuinely one of those moments.

Your camel caravan is waiting at the dune base. The sunset trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes is the centrepiece of the whole trip — the silence, the scale, the light shifting from gold to amber to deep orange as the sun drops. You reach your Berber desert camp just as the light fades. Dinner under a Sahara sky, a Tam-Tam drum performance around the campfire, then sleep in your private tent with nothing but silence outside.

You flew from Newcastle this morning. It already feels like another world entirely.

Day 3 highlights:

  • Road of a Thousand Kasbahs & Tinghir palm oasis
  • Todra Gorge — 300m sheer limestone canyon
  • Camel trek across Erg Chebbi dunes at golden hour
  • Traditional Berber dinner & drum performance at desert camp
  • Overnight in Berber camp under the Sahara stars

🌟 Optional upgrade: Deluxe Desert Camp — private ensuite tent with hot shower. Ask at booking.

Day 4 — Sahara Sunrise → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

Set the alarm early. The optional sunrise over Erg Chebbi earns it — the dunes shift from near-black to violet to deep rose to burning gold as the sun rises over the Sahara horizon. Worth it every single time.

After breakfast at camp, your driver begins the return journey north. Scenic lunch stop in Ouarzazate, then the climb back over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass — different light, different direction, but still spectacular. Arrive back in Marrakech by early evening.

Your final night is yours. Djemaa el-Fna square after dark is an experience that's hard to describe: food stalls, storytellers, musicians, acrobats, the call to prayer echoing over everything. The souks stay open late — this is your last chance for leather goods, spices, argan oil, ceramics. Or find a rooftop terrace, order a mint tea, and let it all sink in.

Day 4 highlights:

  • Optional Erg Chebbi sunrise
  • Return drive through High Atlas Mountains
  • Lunch stop in Ouarzazate
  • Free evening in Marrakech — Djemaa el-Fna, souks, rooftop terrace
Day 5 — Farewell Marrakech → Newcastle

Final Moroccan breakfast. Last morning in the Medina if time allows — the early light in the souks is its own thing entirely. Then your private driver collects you for the airport transfer.

Your direct flight from Marrakech Menara Airport arrives back in Newcastle around 3 hours 30 minutes later. Long enough to write the review, work out which photos to post, and figure out when you're going back.

Day 5 highlights:

  • Final Moroccan breakfast
  • Private transfer to Marrakech Airport
  • Direct return flight to Newcastle

Any time of year works, but March to May and September to November are the sweet spots — warm days (22–28°C), cool evenings, and comfortable conditions for the mountains and desert. December to February is cool and very sunny — a great escape from a Northeast winter, with dramatic cold desert nights. June to August is very hot in the Sahara (35–45°C).

It's an ideal first Morocco trip. The itinerary is structured but never rigid — you have free time in Marrakech, flexible pickup times, and a guide who adapts to what you want.
